A GARDEN competition run for the residents of the Arboretum, Worcester, will include a special category to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

The Red, White and Blue classification has been introduced in this summer's contest as part of the VE and VJ Day celebrations.

It will join the traditional categories in the competition, which include best front garden, best hanging basket and best windows.

Sheila Elkins, from the Arboretum Residents' Association, which is organising the event, is calling on as many residents as possible to discover their green fingers.

She said there were fewer participants last year than she had hoped for.

"I wish more people would enter this year. It does brighten up the area," she said.

Judging is due to take place on Friday, July 29. Worcester Garden Centre, off Droitwich Road, Claines, is sponsoring the competition and providing the prizes.

Last year's big winners were Liz and Mike Sneath, of Lower Chestnut Street, who come first in both the best front garden and best hanging basket and tub categories.

Anyone who wants more information about the competition can call Sheila Elkins on 01905 24513.
