THE star brew at Upton-upon-Severn Beer Festival will only be served in half-pints - because it's so strong.

Out of 25 on offer, Farriers Beer from Shoes Brewery, Hereford, packs the biggest punch at 15.1 per cent alcohol.

"No one has ever seen one this strong before," said Jon Lear, owner of the White Lion Hotel, where the Beer Festival will be held from May 27 to 30.

"It should be quite a talking point, but we will have to

ration it."

There will be nine beers from local breweries at the festival, including Royal Piddle from Wyre Piddle, Black Pear from Malvern Hills, Town Crier from Worcester, and Wye Valley from Weatheroak, Hereford.

Others will come from farther afield, including Wycked from Guernsey and others with names such as Rambler's Ruin, Muzzle Loader, Harvest Moon, Mountain Dew, Black Sheep Rigwelter and Back Street Hero.

This will be the second beer festival to be held at the White Lion and it is set to become an annual event.

"The first one went down very well. We had 25 beers and they virtually drank us dry. We are hoping to match it this year," said Mr Lear.

"It will start at 5pm on Friday night and will go on from 11am each day until the beer runs out, or until 11pm on Monday."

Last year, the beer was served with tapas, but this year there will be home-made pies, with a variety of traditional or original fillings, such as lamb madras, turkey and asparagus, chicken and garlic or pork and apple.

Entertainment could also be on the menu after Mr Lear issued an invitation to folk singers and other musicians.

"Anyone who wants to come along and play for beer will be welcome," he said.
