THOUSANDS of visitors are expected to descend on the city for this summer's free show of culture and craft.

Now in its eleventh year, Skills on Show usually attracts more than 20,000 visitors to Worcester, eager to see talented arts and crafts people and performers.

Organisers hope that July's event will be bigger and better, after receiving a record number of applications by people wanting to showcase their talents.

A third more applications than last year have been received, with about 200 exhibitors expected.

Worcestershire County Council's arts and events officer, Steve Boffy said that the city already had a wealth of cultural talent, but that the show also attracted people from outside Worcestershire.

"The increase in applications is fantastic and it proves that Skills on Show has become one of the area's top events," he said. "What's also pleasing is that there are a huge number of first-time applicants."

The event will take place on the weekend beginning Saturday, July 9 at County Hall in Spetchley.

Hand-made jewellery, belly dancing workshops and French bakery were just a few of the attractions at last year's show.

Visitors were able to choose from five stages holding live music and cookery shows.

For people wanting a more hands on approach, there were between 30 and 40 workshops to cover everything from drama, dance, creative writing and poetry.
