SKATEBOARDERS are hoping to drum up support for a skate park by holding a skating and cycling competition.

The event was held for the first time last year and proved such a success it is being staged again.

The competition, which is being run in Victoria Park on Sunday, June, 5, is being organised by Malvern Link community support officer Andy Brown in conjunction with Malvern Youthworcs and TG's Skatepark Group.

TG's is aiming to build a skate park in memory of tragic skateboarder Tim Greenwood, who died of leukaemia in 2003.

The competition will be split into three sections - BMXs, rollerblades, and skateboarders - with prizes up for grabs.

There will be a barbecue, tombola, DJs and bouncy castle, among other attractions.

Mr Brown said he was overwhelmed by the response to last year's event, which was attended by 30 skaters and watched by 500 spectators.

"It was a really good day last year and enjoyed by everyone. I hadn't planned on making it a regular event but hopefully it will be now," said Mr Brown.

A football competition in Lower Howsell Road playing fields, organised by the same groups, will follow on Sunday, June 19, with a Party In The Park live music event pencilled in for Priory Park in September.

Meanwhile, TG's has identified a site for the proposed skate park, believed to be owned by Worcestershire County Council, and is awaiting feedback.

"I'm very upbeat about how it's going," said TG's chairman Patrick Plunkett.

"It's what we want and what the town needs - it's more than a dream. As soon as we hear it's OK it will be full steam ahead."

Entry to the competition is £3 on the day, but participants need to complete a form, available from Malvern Police Station, My Cycles in Worcester Road or Malvern Youth Centre in Albert Road North.
