LAST week the access gate from Areley Common onto Areley Kings recreation ground was closed and replaced by a fence, so closing a footpath which, I am told, has been used for more than 50 years.

Many people have complained to me about this, assuming that it was a decision made by the management committee of the village hall, of which I am chairman.

I would like to take this opportunity to put the record straight.

The decision was, in fact, taken by Stourport Town Council, acting on a request from one household. I am a town councillor, but have consistently spoken against the closure.

Already many adults and children have been seen climbing over the fence, on their way to school and the newsagents.

There is a footpath at the edge of the recreation ground, adjacent to the allotments, but this is twice the distance from the pedestrian crossing.

My fear is that children will not bother to walk to the crossing, but try to cross the road directly from the footpath, which is a danger that could have been avoided.

There is also a shortcut via the hall car park which, at times, is very busy - yet another danger.

If people wish to complain, they should contact Worcestershire County Council at County Hall, Worcester.
