GOLF: Kidderminster's Richard Wassell finished third in the Midland region qualifier for the Powerade PGA Assistants' Championship.
The 21-year-old ex-Worcestershire amateur champion carded a four-under 66 to qualify from a field of more than 50 for August's 54-hole final at The London Club, near Brands Hatch.
Wassell's driving at Hadzor's Gaudet Luce course was first-class, but a faltering finish stopped him registering one of his best rounds.
He contrived to mess up the final two holes and drop his only shots, slipping him away from eventual joint winners, Nuneaton's Andrew Plester and Oliver Johnson of Scraptoft.
Wassell said: "It wasn't as if I had bad drives at either. They were both fine.
"But I just made things hard for myself, thinning a shot from the edge of one of the greens and taking three putts on the other."
