GUESTS were treated to champagne and canaps at the launch of what promises to be one of the biggest events of the summer.

The organisers of the Severn Boat Festival invited a preview panel to hear about the vision for July's three-day event, which organisers, Worcester Events, hope will attract more than 45,000 visitors to the city.

Last night's guests were given a guided tour around the Pitchcroft Racecourse, where more than 200 exhibitors are expected.

Worcester's new Mayor, Aburey Tarbuck, said: "I've had a look at the plans and I think they are great. I hope it will attract a lot of people."

Managing director of Worcester Events, Chris Carless, said: "Our mission is to promote the River Severn, its facilities and the beauty of Worcester itself."

Among the attractions at the event, starting on Friday, July 29, will be a variety of boats on display, stalls, hot air balloons and a children's adventure village.

There will be a lively programme of entertainment, with bands and theatrical performances.

Twenty teams will also battle it out in the Severn Boat Festival Dragon Boat Challenge.

Darren Pinches, owner of Bushwackers in the city centre was equally impressed with the plans.

"It all helps the tourism and I think that everyone will benefit," he said.

Worcester Events has secured a 10-year deal to hold the event and will be hoping to make this year's launch a huge success.
