SEVENTIES pop sensations The Supremes will bring a bit of glitz and glamour to Malvern next week.

The Supremes and their legendary Motown sound are part of pop history and the Sounds of The Supremes will be live on stage at the Civil Service Sports and Social Club, Pickersleigh Avenue on Friday, May 27.

Kaaren Ragland, a member of the famous trio in the 70s, and two more recent additions to the group will belt out the chart-topping tracks.

Club secretary Nigel Henton can't believe the club's luck.

"For a venue like ours to attract a group like this is brilliant. We hope it's going to be the start of attracting more big names in the future," said Mr Henton.

He said the club, the former RSRE Club, was busy clearing out a proper dressing room and putting up curtains.

"Stars need a bit more looking after. We couldn't really expect them to get changed in the office," he said.

The American trio will arrive at the club just an hour before they are due on stage, with their road crew arriving first to set things up and check things out.

"For security reasons, we've got to get the organisation just right," said Mr Henton.

He explained that the Sounds of the Supremes are currently touring the UK and playing at much larger venues. However, a cancellation of one of their dates in the Midlands led to the club's premises being offered as an alternative.

"We had the space and facilities and, unusually for a Friday night, the club was free," said Mr Henton.

As a member of the famous group in the 70s, Kaaren sang with original Supreme Mary Wilson, who kept the group going after the departure of Diana Ross.

The current trio sing under the name Sounds of the Supremes for legal reasons. The concert will include famous tracks like Baby Love, You Can't Hurry Love, You Keep Me Hanging On and Where Did Our Love Go?

Club members were able to snap up the tickets initially but some are on sale to the general public at a cost of £10. For more information, call 01684 568123.
