AN elderly couple had a lucky escape after their car careered off a Worcester road and crashed into a car parked on a driveway.

Pensioners Leslie and Margaret Woodward, of Forest Close, St John's, were returning from Pershore when the accident happened at about 2.45pm yesterday.

The Fiat Panda smashed through the garden wall of 1a Fern Road and knocked down part of next door's fence, but both Mr and Mrs Woodward escaped without a scratch.

"I don't know what happened - I just heard this terrible crash," said Mr Woodward - who has never had an accident before.

"My foot might have hit the accelerator instead of the brake."

Police were called to the scene and a recovery vehicle moved the Fiat.

Vincenzo Ventura said he was watching television as the vehicle crashed into his son Anthony's Ford Focus, parked on the driveway.

He said his son, on holiday in Jersey until tomorrow, had asked to park his car there while he was away as he thought it would be safer.

"I heard a bang and saw a cloud of dust and thought 'what's happened?'

Next-door neighbour Sue Menzies - whose garden wall was demolished - was shocked to return from work to find what had happened.

"I thought what the b****y hell's happened to my house? You expect to find the house in one piece as you left it in the morning."

City council deputy leader Simon Geraghty said there had been three accidents in four years at the same spot and the transportation officers would investigate.

"This bend is a problem," he said.
