FOOD for thought and for the stomach will be on offer when Colwall Village Players serve up a night to savour.

Two one-act plays are being staged in the village hall, with an interval hot supper, from Thurs-day to Saturday, May 26-28.

Anna Byers makes her directorial debut with World Premiere, which looks at what happens when an amateur drama company arrives at a festival to find no set on stage.

"I love acting and thought it might be fun to try directing," she said. "It's a completely different thing to being on stage."

She described the piece as a light comedy.

"It's not intellectually demanding but it's very entertaining and a lot of fun," she said.

Something Unspoken provides a contrast. Set in the Deep South of America in the late 1940s, it focuses on the wealthy Cornelia (Marilyn Middleton) and her companion Grace (Angela Meredith).

The pair manoeuvre delicately as the vote for the next Regent of the local chapter of The Confederate Daughters hangs in the balance.

Director Marie-Louise Doherty, who recently directed On the Razzle for Malvern Theatre Players, said: "It's sad and it's funny in that way that Tennessee Williams is. On a practical level it's very simple, but it's just incredibly well written and it's got a kind of intensity about it."

Tickets for the event cost £10, to include the hot supper. They are available from John Goodwin estate agents in Colwall on 01684 540300. Advance booking is advised.
