Colwall Players produced two enjoyable one-act plays, proving the value of keeping things simple.

In Something Unspoken, Marilyn Middleton and Angela Meridith were priceless as conceited old lady Cornelia Scott and her secretary Grace Lancaster.

Set in the 1940s in the Deep South, the play is about hidden tension between the pair as they sit having breakfast.

The play was well acted and interesting, with both actors maintaining their accents throughout.

World Premiere was a sharp contrast, a comedy about an amateur dramatic group.

Set in a village hall, the plot has a group trying to rehearse but experiencing disaster after disaster.

Some great character acting from a cast, who perhaps empathised, made it genuinely funny.

Andrew Howie, artistic but stressed director Gordon, and Sue Jago, his alcoholic wife Ruth, were particularly enjoyable.

Mention must also go to Trish Hockett, as the timid Val, Hattie Walker, as the intimidating Sonia, and John Denham, who was great as the self-professed ladies man Stuart.

Putting on two one-act plays with supper in between was an idea the audience loved. The players, in particular directors Marie-Louise Doherty and Anna Byers, should be proud. Jo Lafferty
