HIT song (Is This The Way To) Amarillo? was the way sixth formers at The Chase ended their schooldays.

Pupils Tom Wood and Mark Atkinson, both 18, filmed their own video version of Tony Christie and Peter Kay's number one hit as a farewell gift to friends.

They had the idea for the film, shown in final assembly last week, after seeing a spoof made by British troops in Iraq.

"After we watched the army's version we thought it was a great idea to produce our own. We're always looking for ways to have harmless fun," said Tom. "It was a really good way to leave."

In the video for the single, comedian Peter Kay paces through a rolling landscape miming the song, joined by celebrity figures including Sir Jimmy Saville and Michael Parkinson.

In The Chase film, sixth-form director Mike Woods plays Peter Kay's part. Sporting a blond, wig he marches from the sixth-form centre, around the campus, joined by teachers, around 40 pupils and other Chase staff.

Although Tom and Mark have done technical work for school productions, Amarillo was their first attempt at film making.

"The camera work is quite shaky but I was running backwards all the way," said Mark.

(Is This The Way To) Amarillo? topped the UK charts for seven weeks. The army's version caused controversy in when it crashed Ministry of Defence computer system.
