A landscaping job at St Ann's Well in Malvern has been snubbed by local contractors.

Vandalism to equipment, bad publicity if the work goes wrong and a tight deadline in which to respond were the reasons given for firms refusing to submit a tender.

As the work is being funded with National Lottery money, at least three companies need to submit bids in a tender process, before work can go ahead.

Ian Rowat, director of the Conservators, said: "It's a bit disappointing as I was hoping work would start as soon as possible.

"It would have been nice to get it done for the summer and we were hoping to open it during Malvern Pride Week.

"We're re-tendering the contract, but it means it probably won't be a local firm that gets the job."

Around eight or nine years ago there was public outcry after the Conservators cut down a tree on the Malvern Hills. Mr Rowat said the fear of bad publicity was one of the reasons why contractors approached first time round turned down the work.

The landscaping planned at St Ann's Well includes rebuilding walls, resurfacing, improving the pond area and putting up seats and tables.

"It's such a high-profile site your fame will be known if you get it right," said Mr Rowat.
