WORCESTERSHIRE Golf Club captain Barry Schofield provided an excellent weekend of competitions to celebrate his captain's day.

The weekend began with a 12-hole mixed betterball Stableford competition, played in ideal conditions on the Friday evening.

On the day, no-one could compete with the excellent, consistent form of April Wilding and Andy Greene, who ran away as winners of yet another mixed competition. In second place was the combination of Jill Piner and Chris Price. The captain, teamed with his wife Sandra, was in excellent form and they returned to the clubhouse with sufficient Stableford points to gain third place.

The main attraction of the weekend's golf was the Saturday captain's day Stableford competition, in which over 180 members competed.

Played in windy conditions, that at times prevented players from standing up, let alone swinging a golf club, the weather remained dry throughout.

Good scoring proved extremely difficult. No-one in division two and three could better a par round of 36 points and only two players in division one bettered par.

Andy McClelland, in division one, returned the best score of the day. Playing off a handicap of nine, Andy returned a score of 38 points, which in the conditions was brilliant golf

Young John Wynn, who continues to make steady improvement, was second with a score of 37. Stan Jones was third with a par round of 36.

Brian Marsh headed division two with a score of 36 points, the same number as Roger Blackwell, who came second. Senior golfer Ken Willett was third with 35.

Two players in division three returned scores of 35 points and could only be separated on the count-back system. As a consequence Lee Jenkins was first and David Flanagan second. Scott Mullington was third with 34.

The best gross score of the day was returned by young Matt Pugh. In the evening, the captain entertained some 90 members and their guests, in the clubhouse, to a buffet dinner dance. The music and food was excellent.

Sunday saw the ladies organise a mixed open greensome competition. A large field of competitors filled the course all day.

It was pleasing to every competitor that the severe gales of the previous day disappeared and the competition took place in ideal conditions, with plenty of sunshine and little wind. As a result, the scoring was greatly improved, with many pairs returning score much better than par.

The best round of the day was returned by experienced golfer Andy Dunster playing with young Vicky Lane. Vicky and Andy returned the excellent score of 43 points to win the competition by one point. Ian and Sandra Passey came second with 42.

Five pairs returned scores of 40 points, Linda and Dave Mackie were third and in fourth place were Isaac Nyameke partnered by Phillipa Daniels. The best gross score of the day was by Stephen Dawes teamed with Michelle Fran.

Lady captain, Ruth Scott, won division one of the Ledbury Plate competition with former county player, Pat Catlin, in second place. Jane Quick won division two with Judy Colliver in second place. Former lady captain, Jean Coleman, won division three with Judy Colliver second.

In the team events, the B team ran into pouring rain at Hereford and the course was flooded after eight holes. Some players continued their rounds however and the Herefordshire Club ran out winners by 3 matches to 2 .

The Senior section played well to beat a club side by 3 matches to 2 , giving them a one game advantage for the second leg to be played in September.
