DANNY McDonnell has dismissed the notion of earning another call-up on the international stage.

Worcester City's goalkeeper could only look on as England's National Game XI squad celebrated their Four Nations tournament triumph in Cork, Ireland, with a 100 per cent record.

McDonnell was part of the England set-up last year, a rare feat for a non-Conference player, after impressing the national team's management with his consistent good form at St George's Lane.

The 32-year-old, currently working his way back from a hernia operation, made his full debut in a 2-0 defeat against Wales.

But McDonnell expects that occasion to be the last time he dons a Three Lions jersey.

"I honestly can't see it happening again for me," admits McDonnell. "There's a lot of very good goalkeepers in the Conference.

"It's a professional league now with professional clubs throughout. It would be very difficult for goalkeepers outside that division to get a look in.

"Looking back now, I realise how lucky I was to be a part of it. There are a lot of Conference players in the squad and very few from outside it.

"It's strange, there's only one or two players that are in the squad this year that were in the squad last year. The England management certainly get through a lot of players.

"Obviously, it's great that England won this year. It was a great experience for me last year.

"But I am not looking on in envy. I was a good chance for me last year and I took it with both hands. You only get one chance and I managed to play a full game."

McDonnell past the 200-appearance mark for Worcester in March and will keep his number one shirt at Worcester next season.

City's player-manager Andy Preece has kept faith with rookie Lewis Skyers by persevering with the youngster as second choice stopper.

Skyers made his full Worcester debut in last season's Nationwide North home defeat to Barrow and McDonnell is confident that his fledgling understudy has the ability to make the grade.

"Lewis has got a lot of the attributes needed to be a good goalkeeper," added McDonnell. "What he needs to do is concentrate at working hard in training. He's also got to make the best use of reserve games and perform consistently well.

"And when his opportunity comes along in the first-team, when I'm unavailable, he will need to make the most of it.

"Lewis is only a young lad and sometimes he does lose a little concentration. That is a big part of anybody's game, more so for goalkeepers.

"Everybody has their flaws, but those can be ironed out. It's important to have good coaching and we are getting that."

McDonnell returns to pre-season training with the rest of the City squad on July 1, in preparation for a shot at promotion to the Nationwide Conference.

Worcester finished seventh last season after a late play-off bid, but McDonnell is predicting a rosier outcome next term.

He added: "I don't want to put the kiss of death on our chances for next season until the manager has brought in the players he wants.

"But I really can't see us not being up there towards the end of next season. I'm not going to say that we'll win the league, but if we can get to the play-offs that would be great."
