THE Worcestershire Golf Club in Malvern Wells is situated in beautiful surroundings and the course is in excellent condition, which is a credit to Graham Clarkson, the head greenkeeper, and his hard- working staff.
It is no surprise that the course is being chosen for prestigious county fixtures. Having already this season hosted the Worcestershire County Men's Championship, the club has recently hosted the Worcestershire County Girls' Championship.
Three girls' competitions were held on the same day, separately played over six, 18 and 36 holes and the county's most promising girl golfers competed.
The largest field competed in the six hole competition, which was won by Sarah Whiteman with Grace Westwood in second place.
In the 18-hole Stableford competition, the winner was Laura Geddes with Rachael Maher in second place.
The blue riband event, the 36 hole medal competition, saw Rebecca Mercer return the best net score of 144, with Anna Perrot in second place with a net 149.
The title of County Girls' Champion went to Kirsty Law, of the King's Norton Club, with a gross score of 162, with Anna Rock, of the Kidderminster club, in second place with a gross score of 164.
In addition to these two recent county events, The Worcestershire GC course has been chosen to host the Midlands Counties Ladies' Championship later in June.
A full complement of players took part in the club's mixed open competition, held in ideal conditions. The competition was held as a mixed greensome and the scoring was of an exceptionally high order.
Local players, Andy Dunster teamed with 14-year-old Vicky Lane, were the winners returning the remarkable score of 43 points.
Visitors Ian and Sandra Passey, of the Redditch club, had an excellent day's golf in scoring 42 points to secure second place.
Local players, Gordon and June Jones took third place with a score of 41 points and David and Linda Mackie returned a score of 40 points to achieve fourth spot.
In fifth place, also with a score of 40 points, was the combination of local club member, Isaac Nyamekye, teamed with Phillipa Daniels, of the Droitwich Club.
In the mixed closed meeting, a greensome Stableford competition, the ever-consistent pairing of April Wilding teamed with Andy Greene were the clear winners. Andy and April will now represent the club in the regional finals of the Douglas Bader Cup. Alex and Andy Dunster were the runners-up in the competition.
Lady captain Ruth Scott attended the ladies' away day, held at Stratford-on-Avon and organised by Jill Mico. A four-ball alliance competition was held on the attractive, level, mature course and the winning team was that of Chris Urry, Vanessa Chesterton, Liz Pool and Faith Tubb.
In second place was the team of Ruth Scott, the present lady captain, partnered by three former lady captains, Jane Tromans, Wendy Ormerod and Jean Coleman.
In the men's mid-week Stableford competition, the winner, by three clear points was James Kear, who scored 40 points.
In second place, with a score of 37 points, was senior golfer Gerry Taylor. Phil Bayliss was third, with a par round of 36 and Brian Heap fourth with 35 points.
