TROUBLE at a jazz concert in the Winter Gardens was reported in the Gazette 50 years ago.
More than 500 people came to the concert and Mr Cosgrove, the council's entertainment manager, said that two or three fights took place, two patrons were thrown out and the bar had to be shut.
Mr Cosgrove said that, as a result, future jazz dances at the venue would probably not be allowed a bar.
He had worked hard over seven years to build up the venue's good name, he told the Gazette, and he would not have it destroyed.
The dance was organised by the student union at the school of electronics and one of its officials said that without bar profits, it would not pay to put on the events.
But organisers vowed to raise a petition to have the bar reinstated.
