Despite the number of fires on the hills during the past few months, and in face of the numerous warnings which have been given, smokers still persist in throwing lighted matches among the gorse. On Sunday last, I noticed a man after lighting his pipe throwing a match on the ground in a careless manner and heedless of the consequences. Happily someone was following close behind and extinguished the light. Malvern Gazette, June 9, 1905.
On 21st August, it is the intention of Lord Biddulph to carry on the Southend School without assistance from the county council, and to make up the deficiency in income from the endowment at his own costs. The school will be conducted on independent lines but its efficiency will from time to time be certified by Government inspectors. The hats and coats hitherto worn by the girls will be given up. None of the girls will be allowed to go hop-picking. Ledbury Free Press, June 13 1905.

Parishioners of Mathon found themselves virtually marooned on Sunday by overnight flooding but, together with the vicar and his helpers, they faced the situation splendidly, tackling the annual church garden fete to such good effect that the event realised over £121. It was out of the question for the function to be held in the vicarage garden, but the vicarage itself was prepared. Malvern Gazette, June 10, 1955.
The local effects of the railway strike, which began at midnight on Saturday, have not so far been very serious in Ledbury, though inconvenience has been caused, particularly to workpeople travelling to other towns. Mr W C Brookes, Ledbury stationmaster, informed us on Thursday that there had been about half the normal complement of workpeople conveyed to Worcester by the morning train. One of Malvern's unsightlier sites disappeared this week with the demolition of the former Stokes and Hall Ltd builders yard as a prelude to construction of the new supermarket in Edith Walk. The main structure came down on Monday, along with a group of disused garages just below the lower tier of Malvern Hills District Council's pay-and-display car park. Malvern Gazette, June 12, 1980.
