COLWALL were outplayed by a confident Swindon team, who seized the initiative on the dismissal of Colwall's openers.
COLWALL v SWINDON
Batting first on a drizzle-dampened wicket, openers Tom Wolf-endale and Nick Panniers got off to a racing start, scoring freely and dominating the attack.
Five overs in and the game changed, first Nichols found his line and length and slid past the outside edge of Panniers, then he had Wolfendale taken behind the wicket for 18.
With Tom MacNamara delayed in traffic, a shuffled batting order saw Prince promoted to number three. His innings was short and dramatic, first ball dropped at gully off a cut which went for four, second ball an on-drive for four, third ball bowled by a delivery the umpires were still describing late into the evening.
Swindon took all their chances and Colwall's early progress seemed a distant memory as Panniers and Butler both fell to good close catches. Mike King and Gareth Bakewell set about rebuilding and slowly restored some order to the innings before both perished attempting to accelerate in the final ten overs.
MacNamara came and went in a flurry of boundaries as to did Kontarines and Riley, with Damien Berry the unbeaten batsman showing impressive confidence in his first innings of the season.
The score looked to be well below that necessary to set a realistic target and it proved to be.
Swindon's opener Rourke was severe on Colwall's opening attack and seemed intent on an early finish. The score sped into the thirties although both batters offered chances. Jordan Kontarines struck first with Riley leaping to his right to pluck a catch from the nose of Wolfendale at first slip and then taking an easier chance from MacNamara at the other end
Sensing an opening, Colwall pressed hard. The edge was found and the bat was beaten but chances were few. At 67, Prince induced a caught and bowled but no further breakthrough came until the game was already Swindon's when MacNamara managed a neat catch off his own bowling. Colwall's fielding was good, especially from Nick Panniers at point and the bowling showed promise.
