STEPHEN Moore and Ben Smith led Worcestershire to a comfortable eight-wicket Frizzell County Championship win over Somerset before lunch on the final day at Bath.
The home side had begun on 151-9 in the their second innings and could add only a single before Chaminda Vaas clean bowled Simon Francis.
That left Worcestershire with a victory target of only 138 -- and despite the loss of Steven Davies and Graeme Hick, they sped home against some friendly bowling. Moore hit 66 not out, and in-form Smith finished with an undefeated 39 in this Division Two fixture.
Somerset had to bowl tightly to stand a chance. But instead Andy Caddick bowled four no-balls and conceded five wides in a six-over spell which went for 49 runs.
The former England pace bowler did grab both wickets -- to go with his five in the first innings -- but he proved expensive throughout the match.
It was 10-1 when Davies played forward and edged a low catch to Graeme Smith at first slip -- and at that point Somerset might have been given some sort of chance.
Hick had made 17 when mis-cuing Caddick to Mike Burns at backward point. But by then the score was already rattling along, and in Moore and Smith Worcestershire had two batsmen in top form.
Moore followed his first innings 86 by reaching another half-century off 58 balls, with two sixes and five fours.
Smith, with three successive hundreds behind him, looked equally confident -- neither allowed the early wickets to deter them from going for their shots.
Together, the pair punished some lack-lustre bowling.
Smith called on Richard Johnson, Ian Blackwell, Aaron Laraman and Simon Francis -- but none threatened to alter the course of the game.
The winning hit was made by Moore off Francis, a dabbed single to third-man, as Worcestershire reached their target off only 21.4 overs, 10 minutes before lunch.
Somerset's new captain Smith could hardly have been impressed.
His team followed up a feeble batting effort yesterday with more half-hearted cricket and ended up well-beaten.
Worcestershire went into the match in third place and enhanced their promotion prospects with a sound all-round performance. They took 22 points to Somerset's eight.
