ALMOST 4,000 people turned out for a picnic and fete to raise funds for the Studley United Widows' and Orphans Society.
The gathering was held at Studley Castle by the kindness of the Countess of Warwick.
Visitors enjoyed the castle's beautiful gardens, which at the time were tended to by students of the Agricultural College for Women, based at the property.
The Studley Victoria and Military Band provided music and revellers danced well into the evening.
The sun shone brightly for the whole day, apart from two sharp showers, although this did not dampen spirits.
