THE work of community stalwarts has been celebrated by Pershore & District Voluntary Help Centre.
An exhibition highlighting the work of people who give their time for others was held in Pershore library.
The event was also a chance to present certificates to volunteers who have completed first aid courses provided by Pershore-based training company First Response.
Centre manager Kate Walton said the exhibition, entitled Did You Know? was an opportunity for volunteers to tell their own stories. "It is a chance to show people what we do and thank everyone for their help and support," she said.
Among the volunteers picking up their training certificates this week were Pat and Neil Lightbody from Birlingham. The couple settled in the area about two years ago after leaving their home in Zimbabwe. They said getting involved in the help centre had been the perfect way to become part of the community. Since they arrived in the Vale they have helped at Oxfam, the MS group, a day centre for the elderly and the talking newspaper.
"Volunteering has really helped us to settle in," said Neil. The help centre currently has about 220 volunteers from all walks of life.
Mrs Walton said that although the volunteers were all very active, new recruits were always needed. "We provide a huge range of services including community transport, befriending service, elderly day centre, bereavement support group, single parents group and much more."
