ST PETER'S Church, Powick was full on Sunday morning for the vicar's final service of holy communion for the benefice. The Rev. David Nichol welcomed parishioners from Callow End, Guarlford and Madresfield and, of course, Powick and representatives from each church took part in the service.
The sermon spoke of life's ups and downs and Mr Nichol thanked everyone for making life in Powick at happy one for him and his family.
At the end of the service, the keys of all four churches were handed over to the respective churchwardens and they escorted him out of the church as the choir sang the Celtic Blessing. After the service, junior church leaders, Jean Lean and Julia Sandy, presented Lynn Nichol with a framed set of Rules for Life in appreciation of her involvement in children's work at St James', Callow End.
Powick churchwarden Terry Maple presented Mr Nichol with a painting by David Birtwhistle of Powick Hams in flood (with St Peter's tower in the background) plus a cheque for £400.
Terry Maple gave a humorous This is your Life sketch of the Nichol family, where each member had played his or her part in the life of the church and community. Kate Philips, from Callow End, has written a poem which was read by Jo Wood and early Powick bellringers, under their captain Paul Smith, had rung a quarter peal in honour of the Nichol family.
A shared buffet lunch completed the occasion of thanks and fellowship.
The Nichol family will be moving into Holy Trinity vicarage at Link Top and David will be inducted on Monday, July 4 at 7.30pm by the Bishop of Dudley, Right Reverend David Walker. Everyone is welcome to attend.
