Last Friday, I had the privilege of attending a performance of Oedipus the King by students of John Masefield High School. The play, written 2,500 years ago, deals with man's search for his identity - a play demanding for professional actors.
This was a stunning performance by seven students, six of whom played the chorus, as well as all other characters, apart from Oedipus himself. This was a 'coup de theatre' as the actors were able to portray a range of characters of varying ages as well bring individuality to each member of the chorus by voice, hand and body movement.
Knowledge and seeing are two themes and you only had to look at the eyes of the students to see how they felt varying emotions as they reacted to each change of fortune of Oedipus. The gradual realisation of his fate was brilliantly acted and the horrifying self-blinding brought a gasp from the audience. So much for us to think about as we left the theatre and discussion lasted for hours.
Our best wishes for their performance in Edinburgh - great ambassadors for their school and our town.
