THE Fleece Inn at Bretforton, near Evesham, has officially re-opened its doors with a fun-packed day of entertainment.

Fire ripped through the National Trust's traditional English pub in February 2004, gutting the interior.

Now it has been fully restored and locals celebrated in style with an array of different events.

The fun and games included a Victorian merry-go-round, a display of vintage cars, and morris dancing. Music was provided by members of Bretforton Silver Band - Worcestershire's only remaining silver band - and by King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys. Even TV celebrities Henry Sandon, of The Antiques Roadshow, and Michael Collie, of BBC regional news programme Midlands Today, turned up to join in the fun.

Landlord Nigel Smith said he was delighted with the way Saturday's celebrations had gone.

"It was a wonderful day," he said. "It has taken a lot of hard work to get here, but I think everyone would say it has been worth it.

"It marks a new chapter in the history of the inn. We have had so much support from people far and wide and we are delighted to welcome them back."

The pub is located in the heart of the village and the original building dates back to the 14th Century.

It became a public house in 1848 and has changed little. The 14-month restoration project has replaced the historic interiors of The Fleece's public rooms to almost exactly as they were before the fire. Historic contents, including artefacts dating back to the early 18th Century, have also been returned to their original place.
