MALVERN Angels attended the annual Tens Tournament at Old Edwardians and came home winners of the Plate Competition, the first piece of silverware for a ladies team at Malvern RFC.
Non-league Angels were given a tough draw with two Midlands One teams and a Premiership team in their pool. Malvern's first test was against Midlands One Loughbor-ough where the Angels defended well but came out the losers 22-0.
Second fixture of the day was against Premiership side Worcester who were sporting eight international players.
The Angels showed great character and defended well but, after losing two players to injury, were not able to hold out against the Worcester team. They showed no mercy to the Angels, who will be seven leagues below them in the National Championship.
Malvern needed to win their final pool fixture to qualify for the Plate play-off and they drew another Midlands One team, Stoneygate.
The Angels were the first to put points on the board from a try by Lou Saum, following a strong run through the centre. Stoneygate quickly replied on two occasions but, after two further tries from Malvern's winger Michelle Lloyd and the excellent conversion boot of captain Deb Danby, the final whistle saw a much celebrated 19-10 victory for the Angels.
The Plate saw Malvern against Nuneaton, who appeared to be of the same level. The Angels dominated in all phases of the game, coming out the winners with a flurry of tries and with the conversion boot of Deb Danby again playing a part in the final score of 37-15.
The Angels have their final fixture on May 29 against Kiddermin-ster and then start training in July at Spring Lane on Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm.
