MALVERN Town turned in a polished Travel Factory Midland Alliance performance on Saturday, defeating an in-form Racing Club Warwick.
RACING CLUB WARWICK 0, MALVERN TOWN 2
Malvern's last two performances left a lot to be desired but on Saturday they were back to their best with a fine display of fast-flowing football of high quality.
The first 15 minutes Town had to dig in against the opening burst from the confident home side and only superb saves from Paul Wyatt in the Town goal denied Ollie Olanipetun and then a piledriver from Robert Betts, when he went full length to tip round the post for a fruitless corner.
Malvern got to grips and forced two corners in quick succession, both of which were dealt with successfully by home keeper Richard Williams.
In the 21st minute, Dean Roberts' first time effort just scraped the crossbar and at the other end Junior Hewitt shot wide with only Wyatt to beat.
Malvern took the lead when a pin-point free-kick from man-of-the-match Nathan Jukes picked out evergreen Simon Judge at the back post and he gave Williams no chance.
Two minutes later Town should have doubled their lead when a superb ball in from Jukes picked out Duncan Preedy clear on goal but he fired wide.
The pace of Junior Hewitt and Leon Thomas were causing the Town defence some anxious moments but on the whole, skipper for the day Jukes and the recalled Dave Cannon played superbly well in the heart of the defence.
The second half got underway with Racing Club taking the game to the visitors and Wyatt had to be at his very best to keep out shots from Marcus King and Junior Hewitt. Then on 55 minutes he dived full length to thwart Betts from equalising.
Town weathered the storm and started to get back into the game with Ian Stevenson and Chris Jones taking control of midfield. In the 60th minute, good interchange play between Stevenson and Preedy allowed the latter to play a perfect ball to the feet of Des Cox, who rifled a great shot past the outstretched hands of Williams into the corner off the net. Malvern continued to press and had a good chance of increasing their lead in the 69th minute when a fine ball from Judge picked out the head of Preedy but he headed wide of a gaping goal.
A corner at each end came to nothing before with time running out, a snap shot from Junior Hewitt took a wicked deflection but Wyatt changed direction superbly well to save.
Malvern Town were well in control and only a fine save by Williams from Des Cox in injury time kept the score to 0-2.
