A GROUP determined to save Droitwich Spa Lido has been attacked by the leader of Wychavon District Council, who described it as a "time wasting" organisation that "lacks expertise."
The comments came at an executive cabinet meeting, following news that a proposed wet play area would become an integral part of any development on the site which would in turn have to be completed by November.
When speaking about the Save a Lido Today (SALT) group on June 14, leader of the council, Martin Jennings, said: "I have had a great sympathy for many members of the SALT organisation over the years because there are factions that are politically motivated and have wasted members' time."
Spokesman for SALT, Ian Wild, said after the meeting that he felt angry and upset by the comments and felt it was a case of one step forward and two steps back.
"The council is clearly trying to attack SALT and attempting to split us up by claiming we are divided by politics.
"The reason for this is to detract from the main issue, which is the future of the Lido," he said.
It was also revealed at the meeting that the wet play area would have to be completed by November so the council could make use of £100,000 from Government funds. That sum would then be added to £125,000 from Wychavon District Council.
However, there was still no major decision on the future of the pool at the Worcester Road site.
Ian added: "The good news is that no rash decisions on the pool were made in the heat of the moment."
Mayor of Droitwich Spa, Cllr Richard Morris, said after the meeting: "Many people in Droitwich Spa are supportive of Wychavon District Council's plans as they move us in the right direction, but they still wish to see a salt water pool.
"SALT and Wychavon District Council should now work effectively together for the benefit of Droitwich Spa."
