A GREEN area in Droitwich has been hailed as a success for improving the site and bringing the community together.
The Countryside Agency believes Spring Meadow, created on Primsland Way estate, off Worcester Road, meets all its objectives and has transformed the area.
Funded by a grant from the Countryside Agency, on behalf of the Big Lottery Fund, the green space was set up in March last year on 2.1 hectares of land owned by Droitwich Town Council.
It was originally at the heart of a modern residential development but became overgrown and strewn with rubbish after 20 years of neglect since the estate was completed.
The total cost of the project was £66,000, £50,000 of which came from the Doorstep Greens Initiative of the Countryside Agency, with support from Wychavon District Council and nearby residents.
Ken Jennings, chairman of the residents' committee set up to look after the land, said: "It was a mess, and for the 400 or so people using it, there was a need to provide a rural space for relaxation, dog walking and informal play."
Now, Spring Meadow's residents have created a litter free area with a network of pathways, new and managed trees, and a collection of dog litter bins.
Andy Green from the Countryside Agency added: "This group of people has achieved all their objectives. The community has pulled together, organised litter management and set up a team of voluntary tree wardens. Vandalism is a thing of the past. It is now a safe and pleasant facility for everyone."
