NEW Labour loyalist Patricia Hewitt seems about to cover herself in glory again as Health Secretary.

She is considering selling to the private sector the NHS Blood and Transport responsible for the voluntary blood donation service so praised by Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen in last Monday's Worcester News.

Previously, as secretary for Trade and Industry, it is my understanding that she presided over the plan to sell off to the private sector the export and control organisation responsible for issuing export licences for arms, military equipment and dual use items.

In both cases, they are questionable decisions that raise well-founded concerns about loss of accountability and control as well as retaining high standards of practice faced with commercial pressures. Nice to see where Mr Blair's priorities lie - as if I needed to be reminded.

WENDY HANDS,

Upton-upon-Severn.
