A NEW police community support officer has been introduced by Warwickshire Police to walk the streets of Bidford to prevent crime in the area.

Martin Sandford, a Police community support officer was made a permanent member of Warwickshire Police earlier this month and works under Nav Malik Inspector for Bidford. The PCSO will be tackling nuisance issues and anti-social behaviour.

PCSO Sandford said: "I am glad to be working in Bidford full time and hope to know the community better, which is the whole point of the job."

The PCSO will patrol the village streets on foot independently in an attempt to prevent low level crime. PCSO Sandford's role means maintaining a conspicuous presence in the village therefore he does not drive. "My job is to be seen around Bidford and to represent the human side of the police. I have the power to confiscate cigarettes and alcohol from young people and can direct traffic when traffic lights are not working," said PCSO Sandford.

The role of the new PCSO has been developed as a result of the Police Reform Act 2002. PCSO's work alongside the police in supporting role and provide a visible presence and help to reassure the public.

The new PCSO has been patrolling the streets for the last two weeks and will be a regular figure within the community. He said: "By walking around this village I hope to tackle issues that have been a problem for residents."
