TIDDLYWINKS pre-school ensured that it wasn't playing games when Ofsted inspectors arrived - by showing off the quality education on offer.

The nursery, which opened in the 1970s, is based in Redhill Social Club, Foxwell Street, Worcester, and takes youngsters between the ages of two and four.

There are currently 23 pupils on its books, and Ofsted gave them, their parents and the staff a boost by giving the pre-school its official seal of approval.

The early years education was noted as 'good' overall, with four out of six key areas of the curriculum rated 'very good'.

"It's a lot of hard work but it's all worth it," said supervisor Brenda Chambers. "I thought we were doing all the right things but it's difficult not to be nervous.

"All the staff were great but we can't sit back, you have to keep on with the hard work. You can't afford to be complacent."

Ofsted inspector Rebecca Hadley was particularly impressed by the children's confidence, story telling, curiosity as well as the nursery's 'excellent leadership'.

"Most children are eager to learn and to try out the learning opportunities," she said.

"Teaching is generally good and staff ensure that children have access to activities to cover all areas of learning.

"Partnership with parents is generally good and parents are encouraged to be involved in their children's learning... and are informed of their child's progress through daily feedback."

The report only suggested two areas that need to be improved - staff's knowledge of the Foundation Stage curriculum and planning and assessments to help the children advance.

The pre-school is open five mornings a week, from 9.15am to 1pm and its next Oftsed inspection will be due in three or four years.
