WORCESTER'S Pat Sanderson ended his season in style as he lifted the Churchill Cup for England in Edmonton yesterday after a demolition of Argentina.
England regained the trophy they lost 12 months ago to the New Zealand Maori as Joe Lydon's men trounced the Pumas 45-16.
After last weekend's toothless semi-final win over Canada, England returned to their best as they scored five tries in a strong forward effort.
England raced into a 13-0 lead after just 15 minutes as Gloucester's James Simpson-Daniel touched down and Leicester's Andy Goode added two penalties and a conversion.
Lydon's men continued their first-half dominance and went into the break 21-6 up.
Goode set up full-back Tom Voyce for a try and then added a penalty after Pablo Henn was penalised for punching Chris Jones. England threatened to throw away their winning position as Argentina's Miguel Avramovic crossed for a try early in the second-half.
Things got even worse for England, as Goode was sin-binned for the second game running in Edmonton after a needless scuffle.
England steadied the ship as Voyce touched down for his second try and Worcester's Andy Gomarsall, who had seconds earlier replaced Peter Richards, supplied the conversion. In the closing stages, Paul Sackey and Gomarsall darted over the line as England capped a magnificent 45-16 win.
"Every time you play, you play to win," said Worcester's Sanderson. "My motivation hasn't been to get into the Test team -- it's been to win the Churchill Cup for England.
"It's great to win the tournament. We'll go home happy because of that. We came out to do a job and now that it's done, we can welcome the end of a long season.
"I was pleased with the performance. We played some good rugby at times and eradicated many of the mistakes of last week to produce a solid team effort.
"You never know what to expect from Argentina. Every year they seem to get better and better -- but we produced a really good performance to claim the win."
Meanwhile, Worcester's Simon Whatling and Richard Blaze played as England beat Wales 57-32 to finish seventh at the IRB Under 21 World Championships.
