PERHAPS L Spiteri will find the following more convincing (Letters, Saturday, June 18). Both French and Dutch referenda had a large turnout, which shows that the idea people "want a country called Europe" is a myth.

One Dutchman was recorded as saying: "I am a Dutchman. I want to be able to tell my children that they live in Holland, not in a big Europe.

A recent survey carried out by the BBC asked the question, "should we stay in or leave the European Union".

The result was 73 per cent said we should leave or, were indifferent.

So it would seem that people in France, Holland and the UK do not believe in the European utopia. I am aware that there are another 22 member countries, as you, L Spiteri, must be aware that some of them (including the UK) will not be allowed an opportunity to vote on the constitution.

The subject of Europe was kept under wraps during the General Election, because of a tacit agreement between the three main parties and the BBC not to mention the EU.

This is because as they are all in favour - they would have found it difficult to explain why they were standing on a manifesto, much of which could not have been implemented without EU approval.

As for Americans, you either like them or not, but without their help, the French or Dutch would not be free to vote on anything and neither you nor I, L Spiteri would be writing these letters.
