ILLEGAL motorised bikes are threatening the lives of Church Hill residents, says a concerned Redditch councillor who is calling for action to tackle the problem.
Church Hill ward Councillor Rebecca Blake said she is worried increasing numbers of the popular bikes on the area's footpaths and roads are putting riders and residents at risk.
Ms Blake, who meets regularly with the area's police, said she and the police had received numerous complaints from residents, who were also disturbed by the noise created by the motors.
She said the long, "Roman-style" roads of Church Hill were particularly popular with motorcyclists, but added the craze seemed to be spreading across Redditch.
"Every summer there are more bikes on the road. I'm worried that sooner or later we'll be dealing with a fatality," said Ms Blake.
She added: "I've spoken to bike owners and many of them are riding illegally - they aren't aware of the rules."
In a bid to tackle the growing problem Ms Blake and portfolio holder for community safety, Councillor Bill Hartnett, will meet with the area's police tomorrow.
According to the Road Traffic Act, electric or petrol-powered bikes are classed as motor vehicles and riders must have a driving licence and insurance and wear a helmet. They are also required to pay Vehicle Excise Duty. Anyone who suspects someone in their area is riding illegally can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
