SCHOOL's out for summer on Sunday when wannabe rock gods will be grabbing their guitars and banging their drums in a musical extravaganza.

The event, planned by Worcester School of Rock and Performance (WSRP), is the group's summer show and takes place at Christopher Whitehead High School at 5pm.

It will involve not only pupils, but youngsters from all over the city aged from nine to 18.

Event organiser Brian Hoggard said: "They're all quite excited about it. It's a really wonderful opportunity for them."

There will be 12 bands playing a broad range of music on the day, from softer, funky music all the way across the spectrum to hardcore metal.

"It's a real mixture." said Mr Hoggard, who has also planned ensemble collaborations to make the most of the various strengths available in the school.

The students have been working hard on their performances now for 10 weeks in preparation, and are looking forward to playing to an audience.

Mr Hoggard said many of the younger members are nervous about playing to a large audience; the senior members, many of whom have played gigs before, are helping them keep a cool head. "Its quite a bonding experience for them," said Mr Hoggard.

The event will coincide with the launch of the first-ever summer school at WRSP, with the school looking to draw in new students for an "intense week of rock" between Monday, August 8 and Friday, August 12.

This is the first time the school has run a summer show and it is are hoping it will be a success, with a week of rock tuition finishing on a high note with a performance to round off the week.

Tickets for the show are available from Music City in the Tything.
