Despite swapping their rifles for laser guns, the values held by one Malvern group remain strong after 25 years.

To mark their anniversary, Malvern Sea Cadets will show off their diverse talents at an open day on Sunday, July 10.

Cookery demonstrations, swordsmanship, hornpipe playing and laser gun battles will be on offer at the group's base, next to Club Nine on Spring Lane.

Former cadets are invited to revisit the group, which currently includes around 30 nine to 18 year olds.

Spokeswoman Judi Brazkiewicz said: "The idea of the open day is to celebrate our 25th anniversary and let people see all the things we can offer."

Fun, friendship, adventure and learning new skills is what the Sea Cadets are all about, with the emphasis on waterborne activities. Canoeing and camping are still regular activities but the group also runs IT sessions, competitions and educational courses. A realistic first aid course was recently held, in which cadets took turns as injury victims and first aiders.

"It's a place where children can come, let of a bit of steam and enjoy themselves but we still have the values of discipline," said Mrs Brazkiewicz. "The cadets are all very supportive of each other and we're hoping the open day will attract new members."

The group was forced to find new premises in 1998, after its unit on Dukes Meadow burned down. Sessions were held at Great Malvern Primary School, until funds were raised for a new base.

Mrs Brazkiewicz said support from parents and friends was vital to the group's success.

"We've got people who go out and do anything and everything to raise funds for the group. That's brilliant," she said.

The open day runs from noon to 5pm. Admission is free. For further details, call 01684 565740.
