THERE are more important things in life than gross materialism. Another belief, which I hold, is that the undoubted changes taking place on the planet are cyclical.

According to Tony's and Gordon's epistle, European market forces are all that matter. Government intervention in economic matters is preferably nil. I agree that given these somewhat inhumane conditions the overall standard of living will inevitably rise.

However, some unfortunates, such as the elderly with small occupational pensions, will find their standards continuing to fall. Why worry? Such people do not count or matter anyway.

On the other hand we have the tireless "Green" lobby insisting that climate change, global warming and so on are caused by the artifices of Man, which, relative to the Forces of Nature, are puny indeed.

Well, market forces exist to make profits, not to save the planet. The sustained "increase" in living standards will mean more and more gimmicks and gadgets, toys for the boys, which, if we believe the Ecologists, will add to the toxic pollution which they claim is destroying the planet.
