SOME of your readers may have seen or heard reports of remarks made by Councillor Martin Jennings, Leader of Wychavon District Council, about SALT (Save A Lido Today) at the Wychavon District Council Executive Board Meeting on Tuesday, June 14 and I would like to respond.

Many members of SALT - and others who wish to see the Lido reopened - were at that meeting and heard Coun Jennings make his comments. Unfortunately in that forum we were precluded from responding to them. Members of SALT have spent literally thousands of hours over the past four years honestly campaigning for the Lido to be reopened and putting together a set of proposals that we would have liked to be treated as a basis for discussion with Wychavon District Council towards that aim.

We did this because we not only feel passionately about the cause, but also because we think that by so doing we further our aims by means of the democratic process.

At no time in his comments did he mention the result of the Parish Poll that demonstrated overwhelming support for the reinstatement of the Lido. He criticised SALT as being 'lacking in expertise'. Our proposals presented to Wychavon last November showed a great deal of professionalism in many areas.

In fact, some WDC Councillors have told us that they were far better put together than any of the other three proposals considered.

Councillor Jennings spoke of 'factions that are politically motivated' within SALT. We are not aware of such factions and challenge Councillor Jennings to name the individuals concerned and the political organisations that motivate them. SALT has long prided itself in being non-party political and will continue to do so.

SALT is planning to hold a public meeting on Thursday, July 7 at Droitwich Spa Community Hall. Coun Jennings is most welcome to come and repeat his comments at this meeting - this time, however, he will be expected to justify his criticisms and answer questions on them.

JOHN COX,

Secretary SALT, Droitwich.
