The commencement exercises at Harvard on Wednesday were attended by President Roosevelt. Among the distinguished recipients of honours was Sir Edward Elgar, a guest of the University, who received the degree of Doctor of Music. In the course of a presentation speech, Sir Edward was referred to as the foremost living musical composer. The musical selections performed included two of Sir Edward's compositions. There was a fancy sale of things, new and old, at Bromesberrow Rectory on Thursday last, in aid of a fund to provide lamps for the church, and other requirements. The sale began briskly, at 2.30pm on the lower lawn, the weather being favourable, and continued nearly until 7pm, when dancing began on the upper lawn. Over 100 people enjoyed themselves, and a pretty scene was presented in that lovely garden, with its quaint hedges of box and yew. Ledbury Free Press, July 4, 1905.

Malvern Trades Council, meeting at the Fir Tree Inn, Malvern Link, on Wednesday night decided to ask the Urban Council if it would be possible, during the summer months at least, for the refuse collectors to sprinkle disinfectant into householders' dust-bins. The matter was raised by Mr T B Newey, who said that in a town not many miles from Malvern there had been a lot of trouble with flies.

Ledbury is blessed with many public-spirited citizens who are prepared to give personal service for good causes. Another instance of this kind was a jumble sale organised by Mrs Dunn, which raised £18 profit for the funds of the Red Cross Cadets, that youthful organisation of 33 girls. The Chase High School first team gained a good three-wicket victory in their away match against Malvern College II. Good bowling by Richard Wormald, Martin Lucas and Martin Thomas, aided by good fielding and catching, meant the College only scored 132 on an easy-paced wicket. In the Chase innings, early wickets were lost but a good stand between Thomas (47) and Gareth Sampson (16) set up the victory. Malvern Gazette, July 3, 1980.
Two Ledbury police specials have been told not to bother to turn up for duty, until they have shaved off their beards. The specials have been serving voluntarily in the town for a combined total of 17 years. But they were called into the police station two weeks ago and told to consider whether to shave off their whiskers, or resign. Ledbury Reporter, July 3, 1980.
