WORCESTER'S newest community school has proved it is bang on track by winning an award for its family learning group.
Fairfield Community Primary school opened in September and has already been given the thumbs-up by inspectors checking up on its early progress.
The Brickfields school, which used to be the site of Elbury Mount Primary, has now won acclaim for its Family Literacy Group - collecting Worcester College of Technology's Community Group of the Year award.
Certificates were handed out to organiser and assistant headteacher Kirsten Reeves, together with six parents, at a presentation ceremony at the weekend.
"It was lovely," said Ms Reeves. "One of the parents said she had never received a certificate for anything before and it's really encouraged them to take their learning further."
The group, which was set up in January, meets on Thursday to improve and gain qualifications in basic skills such as reading, writing and maths.
It also advises parents of Year 1 and 2 children how they can help their sons and daughters learn.
The school beat off competition from other Worcester family education centres to secure top place in the category for community learning opportunities.
