REIGNING Olympic three-day event champion Leslie Law is continuing to build a team of young horses that look like guaranteeing him success for years to come.
The Upton-on-Severn-based rider headed the PAVO six- year-old qualifier at the Saplerton Park one-day event near Cheltenham on outstanding prospect Perryfields Hugh.
The young horse has been in great form for owners Suzanne and Martin Sadler, scoring four wins in his second competitive season. Law said: "The horse did a really good dressage test and was way out in the lead after that. He jumped a double clear, coming home with just over one time penalty cross country.
"The organisers and landowners at Salperton put on a super event and the cross-country course was fantastic."
The win takes Law on to the Young Horse Championships at Tweseldown in Hampshire this autumn, where Perryfields Hugh finished 10th in the five-year-old final last season.
Law jetted off for a quick week in Spain with fiance Trina Lightwood straight after the event, making the most of a slight lull in what has been a very busy season.
He has been selected for the British team at the European three-day Event Championships, due to be held at Blenheim Palace in September, with Athens gold medal partner Shear L'Eau.
Broadway-based international Erica Watson finished eighth in the top Open Intermediate section at Salperton Park on Modern Jazz.
The horse, now in his third season, was making only his second outing at this level and was sixth on his Open Intermediate debut at Syde Park a week earlier.
Worcester's Emma Walker made the line-up in a Novice section, finishing a close third on Kristalle.
The seven-year-old won at the Aston-le-Walls one-day event in Northants earlier this season and was runner-up in the Young Horse Championships in 2003.
Walker has also been going well with another young horse, Little Doll, who has finished in the top five at Aston-le-Walls, Great Tew and Syde Park this season.
Kidderminster's Alan Nolan was runner-up in the Open Pre-Novice section on Hillocks Rebel, who recorded his best result of the season.
