ON Saturday my two children and I took part in the Bromsgrove Hospital Carnival Procession. This was our fourth year of taking part.
During the last two weeks we decided on our costumes and my son - in particular - had great fun as he tried on the costume that his dad made. (If you watched the procession he was the strong man in the walking circus float)
We had great fun walking along and felt satisfied that we were collecting money for the hospital.
At the end of the day, over dinner, we were talking about the day and my son asked if we could do the procession next year. I had heard that this might be the last procession so said that it probably would not be on next year.
Much to my surprise my son put his head on his arms, began to cry, and asked why?
What do I say to a seven-year-old? People don't have any time to put in the effort? People can't be bothered to get involved? Our lives are so busy that we can't give up some time for the community that we belong to?
I would like to thank the organisers of this year's carnival for their efforts and make an appeal that they carry on their good work.
I would also like to appeal to people working in schools, scout groups, guide groups, play groups, church groups and any other youth group to think now about next years carnival. Why not enter a walking float? Its great fun (for the adults as well!) and it teaches children that they are part of a bigger community than just their family, school or youth group.
I really hope that there will be a procession next year.
If there is I know of at least three people who will be there!
