FOOTBALL came home to Droitwich Spa with a successful charity sports day which raised a massive £2,500.

The mayor's footballathon day was the first major event of his fundraising year, and involved more than 260 Spa youngsters.

It was held on Saturday, June 18, from 9am, at King George Playing Fields, behind Droitwich Spa Leisure Centre, Briar Mill, and youngsters played football continuously all day to the motivating tunes of 'DJ Chris'.

Mayor Richard Morris was over-the-moon and said: "I thought it was a fantastic success and the weather stayed dry which was good for the football.

"Chris the DJ was able to give the whole event a 20/20 cricket style. The two teams ran onto the pitch with a world cup fanfare, before the 'Thunderbird' music counted down 5,4,3,2,1."

Dignitaries from around the area supported the day including chairman of Wychavon District Council, Councillor Pam Davey.

Throughout the day there was a barbecue and refreshments run by families of the Droitwich Boys and Girls Football Club.

At 8pm the mayor's invitational game kicked off and within the first couple of minutes he went tumbling to loud cheers.

Mayor Richard Morris said: "Thank you to all involved, including sponsors, guests, all players, managers, supporting families, the DJ, the hockey club and catering team.

"Mostly I would like to thank Frank Holliday from the Droitwich Boys and Girls Football Club who put so much effort into the whole event, it really was a great way to get my fundraising going but also celebrate 25years of such a valuable club in our town."
