MANCELL Burgess, of Broomy Hill, Hereford, will be a familiar face to anyone who enjoyed an evening out in Hereford during the 1950s and 60s, especially those who attended the Town Hall and Wormelow where he regularly played with his band called The Paramount.
A saxophone player for most of his life, Mancell also plays the clarinet and violin and set up Hereford Big Band in 1990 with a group of fellow musicians who wanted to turn the clock back and recreate those happy years.
Les Causer, Ted Daw, Nigel Taylor and Mancell, encouraged by Ray Walters, soon attracted other players and rehearsals began.
He may have relinquished his role as chairman but Mancell will continue as the band's president and - for once - saw himself as the centre of attention when band members got together to give him a fitting send-off.
A stretch Limo collected Mancell, wife Val and family to transport them in style to a surprise performance and presentation at Hereford Lads Club, where the band currently rehearses, attended by players from across the decades.
"It was a wonderful evening with everybody there," Mancell said. "I'll be going along to rehearsals and the shows just to remain attached with the band but I've left it in safe hands."
