TRADITION is the key word in the story of Fiddler on the Roof.

This year, Alcester Amateur Operatic Society broke with tradition and appeared at the Palace Theatre, putting on the first of what is hoped to be many more successful shows.

An engaging visual atmosphere was created on stage through excellent use of sound and lighting, a well-designed set and perfect costumes .

This atmosphere was beautifully accompanied by the musical numbers, which were a result of Shirley Stanley's sure-handed direction and attention to detail.

One of the most moving moments was the touching duet between Tevye (Paul Alexander) and Golde (Julie Keeley).

Among good performances, the strongest character acting and vocal presence by far came from Paul Alexander.

He managed to achieve the difficult balance between the comic and the tragic, central themes of the story.

Working alongside director Bev Hatton, his performance bridged the gap between the ordinary and the superb.
