A POWERFUL new musical using the tunes of Birmingham reggae heroes UB40 starts at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre this week.
Promises and Lies is the uplifting story of people battling against the odds to survive on the fringes of a big city.
The international chart toppers chose Birmingham for the show's world premier.
The production features a host of classic and well-loved UB40 tracks including One In Ten, Higher Ground, Can't Help Falling In Love, Promises And Lies and two new songs, which were specially composed for the show.
The musical charts the struggles of Randall (played by Clive Rowe), Marcus (Clive Rowe) and Breda (Julie Alanah Brighten).
It was penned by up and coming script writer Jess Walters, who has worked on plays Low Dat and Terracota for the Rep and written for Channel Four's As If teen drama.
Promises and Lies is directed by Jonathan Church with design by Simon Higlett, lighting by Chris Ellis and Richard Balcombe will be musical director.
Clive Rowe heads up a strong cast and is an experienced stage performer, winning the Olivier Award for his appearance in Guys and Dolls. Burt has appeared in Chess, Les Miserables, Cats and Evita.
