SINGING sensations from two local schools have won prizes in Pop Icon, a talent competition for Worcestershire schools.

Abigail Smith, 16, and Georgia Francis, 13, from Dyson Perrins and Cassie Rule, 16, from Hanley Castle High School each won a different category in the competition at Malvern Theatres on Thursday.

Abigail was the overall solo winner, Georgia won the under 14 soloist category and Cassie won the BBC Hereford and Worcester listeners' award.

Georgia said: "It was an amazing experience, getting to meet everyone, singing on stage and wearing microphones."

Abigail agreed: "It's not often you get the chance to sing on stage in front of people.

"I was more excited than nervous but when you get on stage any nerves just go away."

The girls were competing against youngsters from schools all over Worcestershire, which they thought was brilliant as they got to make so many new friends.

The girls also had to face a Pop Idol-style panel of judges.

Abigail sang a traditional Celtic song, As She Moves Through The Fair and Georgia impressed the judges with I Don't Know How To Love Him, from the popular musical Jesus Christ Superstar.

Cassie, from Malvern Wells, sang A Woman's Worth by Alicia Keys and said she would like to make singing her career.

"Thursday night was really good fun," she added.

The girls all won £50 vouchers for Cranes of Worcester and a Yamaha keyboard.
