THE jungle came alive at St James's School for girls in West Malvern when 19 girls from junior schools in the area joined St James's year seven students for a creative arts workshop.
In the morning the girls designed animal masks using tribal patterns. These were then used in the drama created during the afternoon. Lynne Lindner, director of music and her assistant Jan Thorne, both from South Africa, taught the girls traditional African songs and dances. The girls also explored the characteristics of tigers, antelope and elephants using sound and movement.
Under the direction of Anne Lanyon-Hogg, head of drama, all the creative activities were woven into a drama on the need for cooperation, which the girls were able to perform to their parents in the school's Anstruther Theatre, using the full set, sound and lighting systems. The day finished with a celebration tea at which everyone participating was able to take home photographs, certificates and a balloon, as well as their animal mask.
St James's regularly runs workshops covering a range of subjects and skills. There is also a weekly drama club called Spotlight on Saturday mornings which is open to local girls aged from eight to 11. For further details contact Gill Owen on 01684 560851.
