Heathfield School in Wolverley already offers its pupils the chance to excel in both the academic and extra-curricular aspects of their education, and this philosophy is set to continue under new headmaster Roger Brierly. After spending seven years looking after young teenagers in his role as housemaster at Malvern College, Roger feels that taking on the headship at Heathfield was a natural progression.
"I thought it was an ideal opportunity to be part of a small, independent school with a family atmosphere," he comments. "I do have some of my own ideas for the school but I very much want to maintain its strengths - Heathfield is a traditional school with a modern educational vision."
Roger says that Heathfield's age range (three to 16 years) is quite unique in the area, and he looks forward to welcoming very young children and seeing them through to their GCSEs. The school endeavours to make the junior and senior sections sufficiently different so that children feel they are making an important move, whilst building on the secure foundations established during the early years.
"When our pupils move on to larger institutions for sixth form education, we are confident they are well equipped both socially and academically," Roger adds, mentioning that this year's exam results were excellent - a 100 per cent pass rate for five GCSEs at A* - C for the second year running: "We expect them to aim high!"
In addition to academic qualifications, Heathfield encourages pupils to get involved in a wide range of activities from music to sport. Roger, who was also Director of Sport at Malvern College, is keen to develop this area, with the school already boasting a highly successful netball team and hockey players receiving coaching assistance from a current England player.
He plans to introduce a series of informal musical concerts, giving pupils (more than 100 of whom learn an instrument through the school) the chance to perform in front of family and friends individually and in groups. Brass and string groups will be starting soon.
Art exhibitions are also planned, with the same basic idea of developing the children's confidence and positive self-image. "Heathfield can develop pupils' potential through a range of activities," says Roger. Opportunities for travel are still extremely important, with a huge choice of trips both at home and abroad. A ski trip to Canada is being planned for 2007.
Heathfield offers a true personal touch to prospective parents and pupils, conducting individual, tailored visits rather than large open days, with the child able to spend time in the classroom with the group they are to join.
The 'family values' ethos continues with Heathfield's new North Lodge Baby Unit, which babies can attend from the age of three months before joining the pre-school at three years.
